Computer Memory - How much is good enough ?

Now a days, laptops are shrinking in size, on popular demand from the mobile, laptop lugging crowd. There are a slew of 10" laptop models available in the market from various manufacturers like Samsung, Acer, HP and so on.

I have found that most of these laptops which, by popular parlance are known as netbooks or mini notebooks, come with 1 GB of memory. And they are mostly powered by an energy efficient Intel Atom processor.

Around 4 years back (2005), Tom's Hardware did a research on how much memory an average computer user needs. And they concluded that 1 GB RAM is more than enough for most people's uses.

And now in 2009, their conclusion still holds true, I guess. You can run all the applications that a normal user will want to run - be it in Windows or Linux, in a PC or laptop which sports just 1 GB memory. Windows Vista doesn't count, as it is an aberration.

So have we really reached memory nirvana ? Or is another holy grail of an application going to be developed which ends up demanding more memory for it to run ?

Recently Google announced it's plans for rolling out a brand new operating system based on Google Chrome. If Google is to be believed, cloud computing is going to be the future for all end users. More and more applications are going to reside on a remote server and the end user will need little software installation at his end other than a web browser. This means the netbooks, laptops and PCs of end users will require far lesser memory than is required now to work at their optimal level.

How much memory does your computer have ? How much do you think you need for doing your stuff on the computer ?

NAS Architecture Overview Video.

This free video describes NAS architecture overview for all storage administrators and students.A network-attached storage (NAS) is hard disk storage that is set up with its own network address rather than being attached to the department computer that is serving applications to a network's workstation users. By removing storage access and its management from the department server, both application programming and files can be served faster because they are not competing for the same processor resources. The network-attached storage device is attached to a local area network (typically, an Ethernet network) and assigned an IP address. File requests are mapped by the main server to the NAS file server.

Network-attached storage consists of hard disk storage, including multi-disk RAID systems, and software for configuring and mapping file locations to the network-attached device. Network-attached storage can be a step toward and included as part of a more sophisticated storage system known as a storage area network (SAN).NAS software can usually handle a number of network protocols, including Microsoft's Internetwork Packet Exchange and NetBEUI, Novell's Netware Internetwork Packet Exchange, and Sun Microsystems' Network File System. Configuration, including the setting of user access priorities, is usually possible using a Web browser. Network-attached storage (NAS) is now a major player in the externally connected storage market, moving from simple filer to storage networking protocol provider. More customers are using NAS as part of their core data storage infrastructure to deliver file services and support business critical applications. As a VAR or systems integrator, you should be taking advantage of NAS features like snapshots and replication to meet customers' growing business storage needs.

We will never kill Mono - Says Microsoft

Microsoft has applied the Microsoft Community Promise to it's C# initiative. What this means is - anyone can develop a C# compiler and use it to create applications in C#.

In layman terms, here is how the Microsoft Community Promise work -

No one needs to sign anything or even reference anything. Anyone is free to implement the specifications as they wish and do not need to make any mention of or reference to Microsoft. Anyone can use or implement these specifications with their technology, code, solution, etc. You must agree to the terms in order to benefit from the promise; however, you do not need to sign a license agreement, or otherwise communicate your agreement to Microsoft

Now this could gain some respite for Novell and the Mono Project developers from the anti-Mono crowd. Because, with it's community promise, Microsoft has made it clear that it will not force its hand on open source initiatives like Mono which have its roots in C#.

On a personal front, I use tools like Tomboy, GnomeDo and FSpot on a regular basis. And it would make me very sad if they were to die a forceful death.

Peter Galli has more details on his blog.

What do you think of this Microsoft initiative ? Does it bode well for Mono Project and applications developed using Mono ?

SAN Architecture Overview Video

This free video describes SAN architecture overview for all storage administrators and students.A storage area network (SAN) is a high-speed special-purpose network (or subnetwork) that interconnects different kinds of data storage devices with associated data servers on behalf of a larger network of users. Typically, a storage area network is part of the overall network of computing resources for an enterprise. A storage area network is usually clustered in close proximity to other computing resources such as IBM z990 mainframes but may also extend to remote locations for backup and archival storage, using wide area network carrier technologies.

SANs support disk mirroring, backup and restore, archival and retrieval of archived data, data migration from one storage device to another, and the sharing of data among different servers in a network. SANs can incorporate subnetworks with network-attached storage (NAS) systems.

A storage area network (SAN) overcomes these problems by moving storage resources off the common user network and reorganizing those storage components into an independent, high-performance network. SAN technology also supports storage features such as disk mirroring, data backup/restoration, data archiving/retrieval and data migration. Most SANs are assembled using three components: cabling, host bus adapters (HBA) and switches. Cabling is the physical medium used to interconnect every SAN device. FC SANs can use copper or optical fiber cabling -- the choice depends on the speed and distance requirements of the SAN. Slower or shorter distance connections can be made through copper cables; faster or longer distance connections are achieved through optical cables.

Update your Linux Kernel in real time without rebooting your machine

When ever Ubuntu updates the Linux kernel to a more recent version, I have to go through the rigmarole of rebooting my machine for the changes to take effect. While for a home user, it may not be such a big thing, while running Linux in critical situations, it may not always be feasible to reboot the server each time the kernel gets updated because running applications have to be stopped, and daemons have to be terminated for the reboot to take place - which inevitably leads to loss of time and inconvenience to others.

Enter a new technology called Ksplice.

The Ksplice service called Uptrack will update the Linux kernel in your system while it is running without disrupting your operations or requiring a reboot.

Christopher Smart has written an in depth article on Ksplice where he dwells on the advantages of running the Uptrack service on your machine. Currently, the Ksplice Uptrack service is available for Ubuntu 9.04 aka Jaunty Jackalope.

Firefox 3.5 released with support for the HTML 5 Video Tag and much more

Firefox team is striving to remain in the cutting edge of technology. The newest Firefox release namely version 3.5 is considered by many to be one of the fastest web browsers leaving its competition far behind. Mozilla claims Firefox 3.5 is over 2 times faster than Firefox 3.0 and 10 times faster than Firefox 2.x.

But one exciting new feature in Firefox 3.5 is no doubt the support for the HTML 5 video tag. Web browsers which support the HTML 5 standard can embed OGG format videos and audio in web pages, making Flash player nearly redundant for watching videos online. You can even right click and save the video to your desktop.

Then Firefox team has been catching up with Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8 by including a feature found in these browsers called the Private Browsing Mode where the browser forgets the history of the session and destroys any traces of the websites you visit during this session.

Other new features found in Firefox 3.5 are location aware web browsing, downloadable fonts and improvements in CSS, web worker threads, JSON and SVG support.

Firefox 3.5 is available in 70 languages in Mac OS X, Windows and Linux which makes it truly a fabulous web browser. Of course, one needn't even mention the 1000s of Add-Ons available which extend the utility of Firefox to make it behave in which ever way you want it to.

Listen to what Mike Beltzner - the Director of Firefox Development has to say about Firefox 3.5.

You can download Firefox 3.5 at Mozilla.com.
